Tuesday with Tarinae 6/29

There has been a hefty buzz around the World of Warcraft this week. There are some things that are highly worth mentioning while they hold our servers hostage and hopefully attempt to deal with the 3.3.5 known issues. Let’s take a look around and see what all has been going on!

Guests Posts

As promised, I got the chance to do a guest post for Angelya over at Revive & Rejuvenate as well as some other great bloggers. Check it out!

There were multiple factors for my screenshot motivations this week. I was doing the guest post but I was also playing WoW on a 42 inch television screen with the HIGHEST graphic settings I have ever experienced. This was the most amazing thing I have even seen. The detail, the clarity, the beauty!! There were several that captured my heart, and since have been more but I thought I would share one of my favorites since it has been a while:

If it isn’t apparent, this is from Blade’s Edge Mountains where the beautiful crystals grow and the weird little hobbly-knobbly guys roam around. It is an interesting shot that took some work to get the right way, and it turned out better than I thought it would. I hope you enjoy it as well; it can be used as a 1920×1080 wallpaper.

Real ID

I think that a variety of perspectives on a subject is important. When 3.3.5 went live in the US, it brought the Real ID and a lot of bloggers have their own thoughts to share on it. Some are for it and some are not, but they put the opinion out there to be heard.

Ruby Sanctum

I am unsure if the Ruby Sanctum is experiencing any difficulties or anything, but I haven’t seen a single moment in trade chat were someone was saying LFM RS Need heals PST. I haven’t even heard it on a whisper. I am pretty disappointed with that fact; not that I have really had the chance to sit down and go if they were looking for heals, but I just thought that there would be more people jumping into it. I remember when Onyxia was turned Level 80, everyone loved it. But open a trinket heavy raid for ICC iLvl and nothing.

How is it going on other servers?

Fire Festival

There are some things you should know when trying to break into Alliance cities for this particular holiday.

  • The Darnassus flame is not located in the city, you don’t even need to cross through the portal as it is on the island outside the portal and by the bridge to the flight master/dock. If you are getting hit, it will interrupt your attempt at stealing it so you may need to be especially sneaky. It is important to note that while you DO NOT have to enter the city to steal the flame, you need to extinguish the flame of Teldrassil that is located in Dolonaar which requires a trek through the city.
  • The Exodar flame is tricky. Assuming you will come in from the front, go down the ramps and take a right into the Crystal Hall. You then have to be paying attention to maneuver the flaming braziers that are on the steps as you go up the steps to reach the flame. If you are not careful, you will end up with a gaggle of guards and possibly even dead.
  • Ironforge’s flame is located in the Hall of Explorer’s. I don’t often play Alliance, to me it seems like that place no one knows about except that it makes their journey around the city longer. However, for us Hordies, it is conveniently located to the North/Right of the Deeprun Tram, which makes our venture here a little less reckless if we come in from Stormwind.
  • Speaking of Stormwind, it couldn’t be any fruther from the Tram. This flame is lcoated in the Canals outside the entrance to the Stockades; I agree, it is a little random. The best route may be to take the ship from the Auberdine dock, enter in through the Harbor to the Canals, then keep to the back side of the Trade District to make your way to the Dwarven District for a de-flagging tram ride.

I have decided that I will not be doing a full guide to this holiday this year, I was too busy at the on-set of the holiday to have the chance. However, if you are looking for one, I would happily suggest you look at Jaedia‘s very helpful and thorough guide.

One great thing to come from all of this is the Ice Chip! I got one for myself..so what if it is on the wrong character?

An Off-Topic Musing

I have been to two weddings on back-to-back weekends. There is one thing that I can definitely say with a high degree of certainty: I will NEVER get married in June. Not because I already know a lot of people who share anniversaries that month, and it is not a bad month but it has one deal-breaking flaw: It is to damn hot. I don’t want to carry a 50lb wedding dress in 90-100 degree weather and I don’t want my groom/groomsmen dieing of heat exhaustion in penguin suits. I don’t like sweat and June is just a sweaty month!

I do understand that it is one of the most popular months for weddings so I wish all of those couples good luck and congratulations!

Also, I would like to take the time to proudly admit that in ~12 hours I will be standing in line for the midnight showing of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and I am very excited! I also hope to be in line for The Last Air Bender on the next night but we will see how that one goes!

The End

So while I find out bad news at work that yet another Saturday is going to be ruined for me, I hope that this doesn’t detur my play time but it does in fact ruin my yard sale plans. I wish you all the best in game and hope you keep flames tamed this week!

Tidbits & A Melted Ice Stone

This week has been a very busy week for WoW players. Monday, June 21, marked the first day of the Midsummer Fire Festival in-game Holiday. We didn’t get to expereince that very long as the servers went down the next day for maintenance. I don’t know if it was revealed early or ended up being a happy surprise, but that day, 3.3.5 went live!

So now we are faced with a lot of new things to experience for the next couple of weeks and that is pretty exciting!

While the full patch notes can always be found here, there are some highlights to note for this patch! Note: This is not an exhaustive copy or report of the patch notes.

The Ruby Sanctum

The newest wing of the Wyrmrest Temple raid isntances has been opened. The first portal, Obsidian Sanctum, was available with the release of Wrath of the Lich King and allowed for the killing of Sartharion. This lore heavy raid instance faces the torment of Halion the Twilight Destroyer:

For ages the red dragonflight and its noble matriarch, Alexstrasza the Life-Binder, have dedicated themselves to preserving all life on Azeroth. Recently, the very heart of this virtuous dragonflight has come under threat.

An eerie silence has settled over the Ruby Sanctum, the red dragonflight’s sacred lair within the Chamber of the Aspects. This troubling development has led to fears that the sanctum, home to Azeroth’s largest clutch of red dragon eggs, has been breached by an unknown, sinister force. If these claims are true and immediate action is not taken, the benevolent red dragonflight might be crippled forever.

Real ID

This feature willl allow for cross server and faction communitcation between mutually agreed upon Real ID friends. It will allow access to see first and last names, email addresses, and all characters on the Battle.net account. I have already discussed that I will not be using this feature as some others have said as well.

  • The functionality of the Vote Kick feature in the Dungeon Finder will now behave differently according to a player’s history with the system. Players using the Dungeon Finder who rarely vote to kick players from a group, or rarely abandon groups before a dungeon is complete, will find that the Vote Kick option will have no cooldown. For players who frequently abandon groups or vote to kick other players, the Vote Kick option will be kept on a cooldown. This functionality will adjust itself as a player’s behavior while using the Dungeon Finder changes.
  • I think that the changes made to the vote-to-kick option is great. It incorporates the player, acknowleding through system use that they are a person and that they do have behavior patterns. I am not a frequent user of the option, I have only initiated one vote ever, which could be one too many but the level of douche-baggery was reaching an all time high. All the same, perhaps the benefit of no-cooldown will encourage players to use the option appropriately rather than haphazardly because someone is going too slow or being to nice.

    • Chat Frame
      • Players can now right-click on any chat type (Whisper, Trade, General, Party, Raid, etc.) and choose to move conversation types into separate windows. This will move that chat type to a separate tab in the Chat frame which can be undocked and moved anywhere on the screen.
        • Using the Move to Whisper Window option on a Whisper will place the conversation with that player in a separate tab.
        • Any time a conversation with another player is put into its own tab, the tab will glow when a new message is received.
      • Hovering over the Chat Frame and using the mouse wheel will allow players to scroll through chat text.
      • Players can select Classic Mode under Interface Options to keep the Chat Frame functionality closer to what it was prior to patch 3.3.5.
      • The Simple Chat User Interface option has been removed.

This should help you from losing any whispers while hanging around in trade chat. I don’t know about you but that happens to me often! So this overall, while it may be worded to sound complicated should be helpful overall.

    Known Issues

As with any patch, Blizzard has issued a blue post listing known bugs and problems that have developed with the release of 3.3.5. While the list is large, here is the tidbits that directly effect most game play for end-game raiders and dungeon runners:

  • Pit of Saron – Scourgelord Tyrannus can remount Rimefang during the encounter.
  • The last remaining player in a random instance group can miss out on Random Dungeon loot
  • Icecrown Citadel – Kinetic Bombs will occasionally spawn outside of the encounter area.
  • Players from different servers can’t trade dungeon items necessary to progress through the dungeon.
  • Ambassador Hellmaw is invisible while affected by Banish.
  • Frostwing Whelp’s will aggro players who stand next to the wall on the upper ledge of The Frost Queen’s Lair.
  • The Twilight Orbs periodically disappear during Phase 2 of the Halion encounter.
  • Halion has an incorrect attachment point for Hunter’s Mark.
  • The Fire Festival!

As a Phoenix lover, I really enjoy this holiday. In all of its flame celebrating glory, I just feel all Phoenixy and it is awesome! This is not a guide to the festival, which may or may not make its way out of my brain onto this blog, rather an encompassing look at the holiday.

This holiday includes a lot of different aspects. It has its PVP oriented achievemet, King of the Fire Festival, where you have to infiltrate the opposing faction’s cities to steal their flames. It requires a lot of traveling to extinguish the flames of Kalimdor & Eastern Kingdoms; while you’re at it, desecrate the Alliance/Horde flames along the way for that achievement too!

There has been some debate over the changes done the the holiday boss, Ahune the Ice Lord. In previous years, he has dropped the pet Scrorching; this year, with his Level 80 make-over, he has taken to dropping a “chip off the old block”!

Along the way, you will want to acquire a smokin’ hot outfit and take up juggling as a new form of entertainment!

With that said, I wish you the best in any of the ventures you decide to take part in with the new expereinces and sincerely hope that you enjoy them.

Keep a mop handy, that is a big Ice Stone!

    Tuesday with Tarinae 5/25

I have been so excited about this post! Recently, I had been in the dumps and felt forced to find something newsish to write about or something but not this time. I still haven’t got my computer back but I have been keeping up with my reader and had virtual post-it notes in twitter for on the go resources! Yay me and my ingenuity so I can post this anywhere! And now, on to the srs bsns (I love saying that!)

    Site Announcements

Something I have been meaning to mention for a while are some changes that I had finally finished around this site. First off, I have finished up my EPIC About Me and The Toons pages. I really enjoy the way the both turned out and I still have hopes to do new character introductions but for now only active end-game characters are reported there. Also, reflecting that, I have updated the armory links on the *points* left sidebar. If you’re in a reader, you are missing out on my EPIC graphic skills. Nah, not really but I am very proud of they way they turned out too! Also, thanks to Zelmaru and my post on Blog Azeroth, I have fixed the chicklet on the *points again* left sidebar. It now reads “Feedburner Click to Subscribe”…this is written so that people who are new to the site won’t click the default RSS feed that I cannot change to my feedburner. I also try to keep my blog roll up-to-date and it will be dated for the last updates!

I am also going to be attempting to work with the post scheduleing thing as my summer position will require me to be at work Tuesday mornings at 8:30, I want to get my Tuesday goodness out to you guys, but I am…still…a noob, so don’t laugh if I mess something up horribly.

    Gendered Gaming

Holding a BA in Sociology, the way gamers interact is pretty interesting. Especially the way that people interact based on gender. Mary Varn of NPCcomic recently conducted a poll of whether or not gamers perceived it was harder to be a gamer guy or a gamer girl. The results were astounding that guy gamers believe that it is harder to be a guy gamer. This could be stereotype related or for other reasons; it could also be related to the ratio of male players to female players because both genders believed it was harder to be their particular gender. Other bloggers have also been hitting on the idea of gender lately; links:

    Augmented Virtual Reality (AVR)

This blue post announces that the very popular AVR mod for raiding encounters will be broken as of patch 3.3.5:

This is a notice that we’re making changes in 3.3.5 in attempts to break the ability for the AVR (Augmented Virtual Reality) mod to continue  functioning. For those unaware, this mod allows players to draw in the 3D space of the game world, which can then be shared with others who are also using the mod. In some cases this manifests itself through drawing/tagging/defacing the game world, but more popularly is used to give visual guides for dungeon and raid encounters.

I am not a big user of a lot of popular addons, I have a very bare list of mods actually and a lot of standard UI features. Therefore, I am not qualified to discuss the impact of this change but have read a lot about it from these great bloggers:

    Cataclysm Models

Something I am not going to be posting or discussing much here is Cataclysm models. However, I myself am very interested in a couple of them; specifically:

Big thanks to Aphroditi of Fel Fire for doing the links on twitter!

    Medicate yourself!

I promise that I stealed this with permission! I cannot even begin to describe how much I laughed at this and it even cracked my evil boyfriend’s grin 🙂

If you haven’t seen it’s original post it’s because you are not checking out the awesomeness that is OddCraft! Vrykerion does a great job at reporting the oddities that exist in the World of WarOddCraft!

    Good luck, Gaz!

Gazimoff of The Mana Obscura has taken to publishing a podcast now, The Obscurecast! First episode was up on May 13th so this good luck wish is a little late but it is never too late for encouragement! Taking the step to put yourself out there in such a big way can be a little scary but have no fear, he does a great job!

    A Final Thought & Good-bye

As a final thought, as it has been a busy week, the Auction House Remote Beta is now active to all US realms. You can collect mail/gold from auctions, browse, bid, buy, and create all from the WOW Armory App. This app is accessible for free for iPhone users. For those without iPhone/iPod/iPad access, the web version is also in testing is accessible through the standard armory page. After the beta test is over, the remote service will require a subscription fee of 2.99. This service also comes with its own FAQ from Blizzard. Cynwise has also shown us all how to use our Level 1’s from the armory!

Overall, I have had an exciting week of catching up on my reader and I have gotten great reviews from my healer coordination post! Thanks to all my readers! I haven’t been able to (really) play with the lack of a PC really but you guys make it all better…like a giant Greater Heal Holy Light!

    Tuesday with Tarinae 5/11

Good morning, good morning Azerthotian Blog-Goers! How are you today? I am trying to make the best of a day I have been very anxious about for a few weeks, my first field trip for the kids at work! I am not relieved by the relaxation of getting to come home and play WoW tonight either…

    Player Strains

    • I won’t get to play much at all this week in fact, this makes me very sad. My family (mom, dad, teh baby sis) are coming in to visit for a late Mother’s Day and spending a 3-Day weekend here. That rules out the weekend…until then…I have a non-mother-worthy house to clean after work. On top of this…!
    • On Thursday, we are wiping my entire harddrive and re-installing the OS. I have Windows Vista 64-bit and have, yet again, been having “unexpected shutdowns” and booting problems. I had these about a month ago with some intermittent BSODs so hopefully instead of a bandaid this time, we will cast Redemption and all will be well!

    Anea’s Game!

Being a D&D player on Monday nights, I missed this last night but my reader had some of them so I thought I would join in!

    The Horde visit Stormwind!

Here we come a’caroling, among the leaves so green!

Here we come a wand’ring, So fair to be seen.

    The Vocalists

Other bloggers that have jumped in on it:

    Patch 3.3.5

Oh yeah, it is up and available on the PTR now. The patch notes are fairly small!

    • The Ruby Sanctum, an all-new 10- and 25-player raid featuring normal and Heroic difficulties, is now available for testing! Players will find the dungeon entrance below Wyrmrest Temple in Dragonblight.
    • Chat Frame
      • Players can now right-click on any chat type (Whisper, Trade, General, Party, Raid, etc.) and choose the Pop Out Chat option. This will move that chat type to a separate tab in the Chat frame which can be undocked and moved anywhere on the screen.
        • Using the Pop Out Chat option on a Whisper will place the conversation with that player in a separate tab.
    • Friends List
      • A new icon has been added to the top left of the Chat Frame which will open up the Friends list.
      • In addition to its current functionality, the Friends List will now allow players to add Battle.net accounts (Real ID). Players will have to confirm that they are friends in order for a Real ID to be added. Once Real ID friends, players can communicate cross-game, cross-faction and cross-realm.
      • A new Pending tab has been added where players can accept or decline a Real ID friend request, or select the Report Spam or Block Communications buttons.
      • Players can now select from three statuses which will be visible to their friends: Available, Away and Busy.
      • A Broadcast window has been added to the top of the frame. Players can use this to broadcast a message to all of their Real ID friends online. This message will also be displayed under the broadcaster’s Real ID information in each friend’s list.

I’m pretty sure I have already expressed how I feel about RealID. The ‘Mental Shaman expresses her thoughts as well.

My thought is the lack of privacy and security. I am going to share a quote from teh shaman:

If you have nothing to fear, have never been stalked or harassed online, have never been hacked or had credit card details stolen, you’re very very lucky. The more information that you give out, the more possibility there is for it. Don’t dismiss people with privacy concerns as being paranoid just because you’re not worried. They might actually have a point.

I have had my wow account hacked, there was nothing on my computer but I played on some friends/family computers to make it unsafe…but even more…I have had my PayPal account stolen and REAL money was charged and overdrafted to my debit card. I had not even been on paypal in over a year, I used it twice while in college to buy books. You wanna know what they bought? Aion. It was a horrible experience and I take my security very serious.

Even if it is a game, and much like facebook, I can choose to add them or whatever, I should be able to set things like a display name instead of first and last. I should be able to add characters to a visible list, etc. And I’m sorry, until the ability to hide particular characters from the list is available, I won’t use Real ID. The people who really want to find me in game have my number but that secret alt is secret for a reason.

Now that that has turned into a mini post, I think I will wrap this up. I share this screenshot with you guys as a wallpaper, perfect for 1680×1050. It is no where near as epic as Angelya’s but all the same 🙂

Good luck this week in game, may you get your weeklies done with the slightest of ease and defeat that Tyrant of the Scourge!
