Tuesday with Tarinae: Cataclysm 12/7

Well the day has finally come when the expansion is live. We have waited for this day for a while now and I would love to have introduced it as the end of the world, but we know that The Shattering has already happened, Deathwing is out and about killing people with his wings of flaming death but yet here we are, still waiting but the wait is over. Regardless of whether or not you bought the Digital Download, the Collector’s Edition, or physical DVD’s you still had to wait until that lucky moment of 12:01 AM in the Pacific Time Zone. For me, that meant that I wasn’t able to play until 3AM, and I’m okay with that, I have taken the day off work, and for approximately 24 hours will be pretending that nothing else exists.

Last Tuesday I asked for submissions about what everyone will be doing today (or this morning) because there are a plethora of options available. Are you going to be a Realm First Illustrious Grand Master? Are you going to be one of the 2×10^45 worgen or goblins in the starting zones? Are you heading to Hyjal or one of the other zones to work to 85? Are you exploring the zones? What about archaeology? Will you immediately train flying in Azeroth?

I am sure I can keep going with the options but instead of asking the questions, I will jump right into what people are saying for their answers. As for me, I will be starting a worgen initially then I will work to find a delicate balance between 85 and my 1200×10^20 alts that may currently exist. I am very excited to fly in Azeroth; can you imagine the screenshot opportunities?

Allexant of Shadow Council-US  & Lou will be leveling worgens; a priest and druid respectively.

Gazimoff has told the mage forums his launch day plans:

I’ll probably be hitting the Tailoring and Enchanting trainers first before diving into Vashj’ir. My first aim will be to get to 81 and start running the Throne of the Tides as soon as possible.

Jaedia says:

Move over to Hyjal/Vashjnir and QUEST LIKE A BITCH :3 *ahem* level my Priest speedily.

Rades has an interesting take on the experience:

I will be making a new goblin and worgen. Questing can wait, but that initial swarm of excited ppl won’t! One-time experience!

Moody is…

Going to try to get up to 85 first. May take breaks to start a goblin and a worgen.

AF Guildmate @Zombiegopher says:

Probably 85 first, with dungeons on the way. Unless the 80-81 zones are so packed it drives me insane. 😛

Tasha will be joining me…

I’ll be rolling my Worgen Warrior and playing through the starting zone then showing my favorite warrior Aleksondra some love.

R&R’s Angelya comments:

As soon as midnight PST strikes however (6pm at my place), I’ll be on my Druid, heading for Mount Hyjal :) Can’t wait!

Fobok blogs that his plans are to get his paladin to 85 and he discusses there just how he is going to do that!

My loving boyfriend says:

I’m going to be waving to all of my friends from puppy land.

Psynister makes me smile:

My plan is to roll more toons so that I can delete more toons…in order to yet, roll more toons!

And after a great chat with Cynwise, he has decided that he has not decided.

So there you have it, what your friends around the WoW community will be doing come this Tuesday, whether it be 3AM or 6PM, we will all be finding our very own ways o enjoy this game. As far as I am aware, race changes will be available to the new races upon the release of Cataclysm but there are not Realm First racials any more to compensate for race changes.

If I don’t see you in game, I would still love to know what you have been up to today or what you will be up to!

I hope you all enjoy the expansion release day!

((PS. I just threw in random block quotes to break up the text a little bit, blocking it all made it very spacey!))

Tarinae’s Tactical Survival Guide

We interrupt your broadcast of Tuesday with Tarinae for an emergency message: *beeep beeeeep*

The end of the world as we know it has come to an abrupt end when the monstrous dragon Deathwing erupted from the center of Azeroth. The sheer devastation upon this land is unprecedented and it is safe to say, the world, and all the people in, may never recover.

In order to help your ultimate survival your host, Tarinae, has put together a list of things you can benefit from knowing. Remember to pack your ruck sack with lots of spring water and your fire extinguisher!

First for the paladins who may not want to move on and read, we will start with you, but I beg you to continue you reading for your own safety!

Be prepared to see your talents reset because they expect that the balancing changes will be too drastic! This applies for priests, shamans and druids as well.

Holy Changes:

  • Holy Radiance now has reduced effectiveness on targets over 8 yards away from the paladin.
  • Beacon of Light now lasts 5 minutes, up from 60 seconds.
  • Blessed Life: the effects of this talent cannot occur more than once every 8 seconds, up from every 2 seconds.
  • Illuminated Healing absorb shield now absorbs 10% of the total amount healed, up from 8%. Each point of Mastery increases the effect by an additional 1.25%, up from 1%.
  • Light of dawn has been redesigned. It no longer has an enforced cooldown, now costs Holy Power instead of mana, and scale in direct proportion to the amount of Holy Power used. In addition it now heals the 5 most injured group targets (including self) in a 30-yard frontal cone.
  • Protector of the Innocent no longer triggers from self-heals.

These changes are not quite as fun or helpful as what the retirbution tree is seeing but these are all changes that we have been expecting to see. Remember that Light of Dawn is reported to be a smart heal and that specific Beacon timers should no longer be needed. The biggest change for Light of Dawn is that it consumes HoPo, so please watch your charges if WoG is of a strong dependency level.

And because of my latest status, we will take a look a the changes to Retribution so I know how to pwn Deathwing’s face:

  • Crusade now also has a proc on kill to increase the healing done by the paladin’s next Holy Light by 100/200/300% for 15 seconds, in addition to its current effects.
  • Divine Storm: This ability has been redesigned. It no longer consumes Holy Power and instead costs 5% of base mana. It shares a cooldown with Crusader Strike and hits all nearby enemies for 60% weapon damage.
  • Pursuit of Justice now has an 8-second internal cooldown, shared with Blessed Life.
  • Rebuke no longer initiates Auto Attack.
  • Sanctity of Battle now also causes Divine Storm’s cooldown to be reduced by Haste effects.
  • Zealotry no longer consumes 3 Holy Power, but still requires 3 Holy Power to use.

I absolutely adore these changes for the most part. I am not sure how the Pursuit of Justice change effects the mechanics but when I can use Templar’s Verdict immediately after Zealotry, we may see that a little intense! Deathwing here I come!

So now that my fellow paladins and I are armed for battle, let’s take a look at the other changes we need to prepare ourselves for! (Take a look behind the cut!)

That’s right. After 5 years of the same battle standards, we begin to see the outcoming of new allies. ((Personally, I cannot wait to roll a troll druid and gnome priest. Please note that you CANNOT race change to the new combos until the expansion is released.)) Together along side those of us who have battled our way through rough terrains of Outlands, and the harsh northern wastelands of Northrend, our new allies will stand proudly by our side and shield us from the harsh flames of the dragon’s wings!

I have am a strong believer in charging into the wild and braving the unknown, but my fellow news anchormen over at MMO-Champion have previews of all the zones you are interested in. I encourage you to know what you are going up against in order to survive this big…shattered, new world ((read: I don’t want spoilers, I want experience.))

But none of this is the end of the devastation to our beautiful world, and believe me, it was beautiful. Two well-known beasts of riding capacity have become extinct. No longer will we have the esteemed pleasure of trying to will the tigers or raptors of Zul’Gurub to want us, to friend us, to let us ride into battle upon their backs; to their loss I pay my deepest respects to, I am sure they would have made amazing animal companions.

But as this newscast comes to a close, let’s go to Sammew on location at the Official Forums and see what he has to report:

What is not in:

  • Creating worgen/goblin characters
  • Worgen/Goblin start zones
  • Archeology
  • Professions past 450 (Illustrious Grand Master)
  • Guild leveling
  • Guild achievements
  • Eastern Kingdoms/Kalimdor flight
  • New Zones (80+)

What is in:

  • Portals in Dalaran/Shattrath Removed
  • Class trainers in Dalaran where portals once were
  • New race-class combinations (excluding worgen/goblin)
  • New Gnome/Troll starting areas
  • Changes to existing zones
  • New [Cataclysm] load screens
  • New [Cataclysm] intro cinematic
  • New [Cataclysm] login screen
  • New music
  • City Quartermasters, with rep tabards
  • Bug fixes
  • Class balancing
  • Druids, paladins, priests, and shaman will have their talent trees reset
  • Experience required to gain levels 71 through 80 is being reduced by 20%
  • New tamable hunter pets (Monkey, fox, dog, and beetle, as well as new skins for existing pet classes.)

Thank you Sammew. And so we will close this tragic broadcast and let you return to your daily lives, whether or not they be routine from here on out. On this day, “a day which will live in infamy” ((Come on, December 7th?)), we have decided to leave you with a song, in the hopes that it bolsters your spirits and leaves you with a since of dignity and strength.

May the Old Gods be watching over you and Azeroth today.

Over & out…

Tuesday with Tarinae 11/16

With the rain and gloom hanging around outside my bedroom window it was pretty hard to get out of bed to write this, especially when it is warm in there and so “brrrr” out here! I could go on and on about the best $30 I ever spent 5 years ago being this amazing “sweatshirt” blanket that says “Don’t fear the Turtle” (ps. Maryland Terrapins!) but I figure I will just skip right t the good stuff I actually got out of bed to talk about!

Insane in the Membrane

Yes, it was explained that insane in the membrane would be gone, not gone, but unattainable after The Shattering given that the reputations would be different and the Shen’Dralar would be gone for good. However, it has been retracted and the objectives have been changed. For those that have already done the Shen’Dralar, you also will get a new Feat of Strength in a patch in the who-knows-when future. Check out full details here on the community site. There was a blue post that started the removal mess but now, given the changes google won’t help me find it.

Rohan and Blessing of Kings recently did a response post to a forum post on thoughts about the authenticator. This is a great time to point out a couple things about authenticators. I have one, it was free and it is on my phone. I thought that would be a little dangerous (my iPhone had already had one restore before that), but not having the extra layer is more dangerous! As a Guild Master, the new guild interface allows us to check mark a box: Requires Authenticator, for you to even have access to the bank as any given rank. I don’t currently have any set that way, but I could see it changing after Cataclysm and our first guild meeting. Also, you don’t have to have an iPhone/Driod, or even order a keyfob now. There is a new Dial-In Authenticator available. It is more freelance and will only require you to call from a SPECIFIC phone if something seems out of the ordinary with your login. If I went that route, set up my cell phone, and wanted to play on my parent’s computer…guess who’s cell doesn’t get service…I think I will pass.

Fire Shall Rain Upon The Earth

The image can be used as a 1600×900 wallpaper.

Phase 4 of the Elemental Invasion has begun and Orgimmar & Thunderbluff are being ravaged by elementals. The evacuation process has begun and if you find yourself unable to survive the horrors, you too can evacuate by visiting the portals in the inn. It is your civil duty as a member of the Horde (andiguessofthealliancegaglol) to defend and protect our cities by placing the barricades and destroying the invaders! Stand close to any rift as you finish its demise for an elemental buff; obtain all 4 (Orgrimmar: Fire & Earth/Thunderbluff: Wind & Watter) for Tripping the Rifts.

When the battle (event) has ended, see the Valley of Honor or the are of the Guild Bank Totem Pole for Boss Portals (2 elements in each city). You will have the chance to queue to fight the bosses we all remember. The bosses that had our lowbie arses for dinner at some point: Crown Princess Theradras of Maraudon (Earth), Kai’ju Gahz’rilla of Zul Farrak (Water), Grand Ambassador Flamelash of Blackrock Depths (Fire), Prince Sarsarun of Ahn’Qiraj (Wind). Each instance has a daily quest that depending on how fast your groups start, you may have to be a ninja to pick up!

Also on a side-note of lore, Prince Sarsarun is a model after the boss that you have to defeat for the legendary Thunderfury quest line!

ZOMG Oh hey, it is a patch. Yes, this patch is dropping today with about 700MB of data. No, this is not The Shattering.

This patch sets the game up for 4.0.3a The Shattering to occur but currently no game changes are happening and no new race/class combos are available.

There is no release date on The Shattering but I am wondering, will they really release it 2 days before a holiday? I hope not, guess who goes out of town for almost 5 days next Wednesday. So that leaves 11/30 which is only a week before the Cataclysm; really, just a week? Or will they surprise us with a random maintenance on like, Thursday?! That is what I am hoping for, but I doubt it.

I certainly am glad that the invasions are lasting more than 1 day, but I don’t want them to last a week either, that could get really annoying.

Random Tisbits & Goodbye

The loot that this event drops is a little less sentitmel and cool than Wrath’s event. Vrykerion, Paul, and myself all agree that “epically cool” > Epicz! I mean when you think about it…Argent Dawn TabardArcanite RipperVAMPIRIC BATLING…versus gear that will be outdated in a month? Yeahhh. Totally.

Also, I am still trying to get a header for this theme, or I may see what else is available. *Puts on thinking cap*

And whether or not you buy the digital download or disc copy, servers will not go live until 12:01 Pacific Time!

And now, the first server up ping is resonating, so go; download the patch and play! Remember the 5 instances per hour when you are farming those bosses in that short time period!

Cataclysm: Build 13221

Right now, my outlook on this whole thing is pretty pessimistic, the admittance that “our strengths” aren’t available at Level 80 has left me hopeless. But, in the end, Cataclysm is barely over a month away and the changes that are coming with this build are eye-popping, hope generating, amazing. So let’s give this blog some good overtones and take a look!

  • Holy Radiance‘s effectiveness now diminish on targets farther than x yards away.
  • Divine Light base healing has been increased by 30%. From 8538-9512 to 11100-12366
  • Flash of Light base healing has been increased by 30%. From 5313-5961 to 6907-7750.
  • Holy Shock base healing has been increased by 30%. From 3033-3285 to 3943-4271.
  • Holy Light base healing has been increased by 30%. From 3202-3567 to 4162-4637.
  • Beacon of Light now lasts 5 min, up from 1 min.
  • Mastery: Illuminated Healing now absorbs 10% of the amount healed, up from 8%. Now lasts 8 sec, up from 6 sec. Each point of mastery increases the absorb amount by an additional 1.25%, up from 1%.
  • Lay on Hands no longer restores mana.
  • Holy Wrath now scales from 61% of SpellPower, up from 30%. Base damage reduced by 22%, from 3122 to 2435.
  • Exorcism now scales from 34.4% of SpellPower or AP, up from 15%. Base damage increased by 15% from 2343 to 2741.

HOLY COCOBONGOS FLASHLIGHT BATMAN! Those caps are a moment of squee for the sheer look at those base numbers. This brings the total buff to over 40% for most of the healing spells. I believe Word of Glory was included in the hotfix but not listed with the builds.

The change to Beacon of Light, as one of my readers, Thoger, states will make the glyph obsolete. You mean to tell me, after two years I get this glyph and it is worthless! Darn. But I like the change, it isn’t a GCD wasted every 1-1.5 (depending on glyphs). What does the new glyph do?

So, at a 5-minute duration, the expense of mana shouldn’t be a concern a given a genuine low mana cost at 6% base mana. This change can be easily handled if you recall my recent glyph analysis and see the recommendation that Glyph of Cleansing can be beneficial in it’s reduced mana cost; the mana cost for Cleanse is 14% base mana, more than double that of a 5-minute Beacon.

The change to Lay on Hands means that it can no longer be used as a form of Innervate as I have heard of it being used. This also means that the glyph has been changed. In live, it stands to return us with as much mana as it returns to the target. The new updated glyph? Simply returns 10% mana to us when cast. That is equal to the base return of Divine Plea, without the healing reduction, but with an 8-11 minute CD.

And as if Mastery wasn’t good already, the increase the amount absorbed by 2% and every point of mastery another .25! And the duration! I would like to point out that the duration of the buff as it stood was the CD of HS so by the time it would fall off, we could get another buff on the target, but this way, there will be some overlap with casting times and other situationals. This is a good time to remind you that to gain a point of mastery rating (1.25% increased absorption) you have to have ~46 Mastery Points.

And finally, the changes to the damaging spells don’t necessarily effect us, but if you foresee yourself leveling as Holy, this is a nice buff to the drab and long-winded holy “DPS” rotation for leveling.

Could all of this mean…that we aren’t broken at 85? Only time shall tell since I am not a beta participant, but we shall see in the end!

And as always, it is important to credit the sources used, so you can find the full details for all classes and specs with this build at MMO-Champion, but when clicking that link, please be aware that it may contain spoilers as there are some very vivid images as you click. We’ve seen the release of the Cataclysm Launcher, and video and image coverage of the Login screen are available as well as dance information, but don’t say I didn’t warn you!

PS. Stay turned for a post, deeply explaining my horrible amount of pessimism.
PPS. Yes, my Light of Dawn is macro’d to /s Holy Flashlight, Batman!

The Healadin in 13066 & 13536

Okay, it is time to take a look at what I have gotten behind in over the past week. There is a CataBuild (13066) and PTR Patch 13156 that I have been missing lately!

I’m just going to jump right into the small amount of changes for Holy that come from this build. These changes are neutral and minimal.

  • Spiritual Focus no longer gives you hit based on your Spirit. Renamed to Paragon of Virtue – Reduces the cooldown of your Divine Protection by 10/20 sec and the cooldown of your Avenging Wrath by 30/60 sec.
  • Enlightened Judgements now also grants hit rating equal to 50/100% of any Spirit gained from items or effects.

We keep the hit rating aspect of Spiritual Focus, and the cooldown on Avenging Wrath is beneficial, it can now, at 2/2, match with the cooldown on Divine Plea, which we can remember the cooldown being doubled and its effectiveness cut in half. Otherwise, being able to take less damage at a quicker CD, can help save lives, especially with all of our passive healing to self.

A side-note from 13082

  • Rule of Law no longer increases the critical effect chance of Holy Shock, affects Hammer of the Righteous instead.

While this change does remove some of the healing utility from the talent, we can still gain benefits from its remaining effects on Word of Glory.

I think it is great to see something direct (i.e. healing) been increased. For far too long we have seen increased cooldowns, decreased mana tools, etc. These changes affect our our overall healing in a positive manner but I still struggle with the fact that we have far too many buttons that do too similar things.

In previous attempts, a HS+HL could accomplish the same thing that one expensive FoL could pull off. The effectiveness of my go-to-heal in Wrath is babified in the face of its successor, Divine Light. I equate the use of these heals to the Priest series: Lesser Heal, Heal, Greater Heal, etc. They massively buffed our healing arsenal but didn’t do anything radical to change it. Will it be worth casting fast, expensive…or slow and hefty…or eat up that Holy Power.

Note the major change in this build from the last one is I removed a point from Protector of the Innocent and Aura Mastery to get 2/2 in Paragon of Virtue, as of right now that is the only change until they decided our remaining points don’t need to be so “cookie-cutter” (source).

Well there you have it, the latest changes for those of us who call ourselves healadins and maybe someday soon we will get to test it out!

Time to cash in: Currency Conversions

The question burning through my mind and the minds of most of the people I interact with regularly is what to do about the currency. We know that Cataclysm is bringing with it (i.e. 4.0.1 is bringing it) currency conversions for all emblems, including Badges of Justice, as well as a new honor point system. That raises the types of questions of what should we do with what we have? I was recently even asked whether we should grind and get our BOAs now or wait until 4.0.1 was live and then do it.

My response was uneducated at the time, thinking that the prices for gear would be relatively the same and that grinding the new mechanics would work it out for them to know how the changes in systems is working. But I was wrong. For the general cost of gear, it is on par for what they cost in emblems (an Emblem of frost being ~11 JP and the standard piece being 1100) but I was mistaken in the rest of the answer.

So now I have done my research and I have resolved the bad advice and I want to share what I found with all the readers who are asking the same questions.

Currency Conversions

The current cost of 1-80 hierlooms on the PTR is much higher then it should be. Teir 10-251 gear costs 695/1100 JP, whereas the heirlooms cost 2700/3500 JP.

The cost of heirlooms in 4.0.1 has been intentionally increased above what they currently cost to match the gain of points players will see at level 85. It’s recommended that if you want to buy heirlooms you do so now before 4.0.1 is released, or wait until after purchasing Cataclysm, leveling to 85, and running that content for points.

The conversion rates for Emblems -> Justice Points, as well as the “drop-rate” have been released as well.

These changes are expected to happen in patch 4.0.1 and to come with a soft cap of points meaning that you can be converted to have more than 4000 but you will be unable to receive any more until you are under the cap. With 4.0.3 comes a hard cap of no one being able to break the 4000 cap for any reason (source).

The drop rate for the points versus the method in which emblems were dropped is:

Lich King Heroic dungeon boss — 16 Justice Points
Lich King daily normal dungeon — 12 Justice Points
Lich King daily Heroic dungeon — 23 Justice Points
Lich King raid boss — 23 Justice Points

Cataclysm Heroic dungeon boss — 75 Justice Points
Cataclysm daily normal dungeon — 75 Justice Points
Cataclysm daily Heroic dungeon — 75 Valor Points
Cataclysm 10-player raid boss — 75 Valor Points
Cataclysm 25-player raid boss — 105 Valor Points

This is to prohibit gaining points from places we would have “out-grown” (source).

So the ultimate idea is to buy your BOAs and spend your honor now while you have it and while you know WTF is going on. Good luck to you and I hope this helps answer any questions and resolve any doubts you had.

Build 13033 (Cataclysm & the PTR)

So the latest bit of news is that recently, the PTR received a massive patch. This thing was a few GB worth of massiveness information overload. The Holy paladin, after settling into some of the changes with the tree, received a blow that really hurts, in my opinion. What could have been a strong build with support from the ret tree now looks like a hodge podge of talents slung everywhere BUT the holy tree.

First let’s take a look at the changes.

Enlightened Judgements now also Increases the range of your Judgement by 5/10 yards.

This change is addition to its other effect that your judgements heal you for x amount when cast. If you take into consideration that Ret received changes recently that reduced their Judgement range from 15/30 to 10/20 we now have to spend 4 talent points to maintain our 40 yard stance to judge. I could see more detrimental changes than this but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect us all the same.

Divinity is gone, moved to Protection

What!? I was so excited this was moved to the Holy tree. We started off beta pretty early with the change to put this in the holy tree…it makes sense to be there imho…but alas, they’re going to fill its spot in the Holy tree with more useless talents. It is getting really hard to get 31 strong points in the build.

Protector of the Innocent is now a Tier 1 Holy Talent and has been revamped – Casting a targeted heal on any target, including yourself, also heals you for 1240.83 to 1427.62. (Multi ranks, but currently all with the same value)

Somewhere, I am sure that they are saying the less we have to heal ourselves, the more time we spend healing everyone else. Which that is true…but…I would perfer to have stronger heals to perform on everyone than just healing myself for minor flesh wounds all the time.

Divinity is now a Tier 1 Protection talent.
Protector of the Innocent is gone, moved to Holy.

This just sums up the changes that I have already talked about and I fully believe this flipflop of talents was stupid.

Selfless Healer now increases the effectiveness of Word of Glory’s heal by 25/50% when used on others.

More often than not, we will use Word of Glory on others so could be a highly beneficial change. However, sorry to get your hopes up but it is currently Tier 5 in the Ret tree. With that said, let’s take a look a potential build:

Holy: All talents that have points are max rank. This gives us a total of 31 points. Chosen talents are Protector of the Innocent, Judgements of the Pure, Clarity of Purpose, Last Word, Divine Favor, Infusion of Light, Daybreak, Enlightened Judgements, Beacon of Light, Speed of Light, Sacred Cleansing, Conviction, Aura Mastery, Tower of Radiance, and Light of Dawn.

This holy tree excludes talents that boost damage such as Denounce. It also has no points in Blessed Life as you should not be getting hit. Start with 2 ranks in Protector of of the Innocent and work your way down; there has been some debate where to put the last point and I went back to Protector instead of Spiritual Focus because I don’t seem to have any problems with my judgements hitting and I will not miss a heal.

Prot: Divinity increases healing done by up to 6% and Eternal Glory has a 30% chance for Word of Glory not to consume Holy Power. Both are great for healing and with the Divinity change it destroys our ret support.

Ret: Improved Judgement for range and Crusade for Holy Shock healing. In previous builds, we would have had access to Rule of Law for Word of Glory and Holy Shock critical effects but unless you want to take those points from the Prot tree, we can no longer get there.

My plea is that they will put Divinity back into the place it had called home and take away our protector! We save not protect! Maybe that should be a mantra? Maybe not.

Anyways, with these changes done on the PTR, there is one more thing that I don’t think was out with the last patch on the PTR or maybe I just hadn’t noticed but…CULTURE SHOCK at seeing this:

Yes, I had a spell power/int gem in this piece…do as I say not as I do?… but spell power is no longer a stat on gear or gems…and int gems are red…and…MY PLATE HAS SPIRIT. It isn’t that I didn’t know these changes were coming, it is just that…well, there they are!
